ENG Balance Test Instructions

Description of Test:

Electronystagmography (ENG) is the most common test performed to evaluate the function of the inner ear balance organs.  The balance test (ENG) requires about 1 to 1 1/2hours.  Your inner ear balance system will be stimulated with different head and body positions, and by running cool and warm water into your ear canals.  Small electrodes taped by your eyes will record your eye movements during this time.  You may or may not become dizzy during the test; either is a normal reaction.  If you do become dizzy, it lasts only a few minutes at most.  However, in some instances a person may experience a slight unsteadiness after the test, so it is advisable to have someone else drive you home.

Instructions:

Please follow these instructions, if you are scheduled for a test of your balance system.  Certain medicines, which affect the central nervous system, can affect the results of this test.  PLEASE DO NOT take any of the following medications or beverages for 3 days (72 hours) before your test:

  1. Sleeping medications
  2. Tranquilizers
  3. Antihistamines
  4. Barbiturates
  5. Alcoholic beverages
  6. Pills for dizziness
  7. Sedatives
  8. Pain pills

Non-prescription forms of ibuprofen (Advil, Nuprin, etc.) as well as Tylenol and aspirin may be taken if necessary.  If you are unsure if one of your medications falls into any one of these categories, please call your physician.

Make-up should not be worn.

Have someone drive you home after the test.
