Nose and
Sinuses
The nose
and sinuses comprise an important
area of anatomy and has several
important functions. Obviously, it
is a major portion of the upper
airway. Normally, the natural
breathing pattern is through the
nose. The normal air flow through
the nose can be disrupted either by
derangement of the structures in the
nose, like nasal septal deviation or
enlarged turbinates, or by mucosal
swelling, as caused by inflammation
and allergies.
Another
important function of the nose is to
warm and humidify the air we breathe
in. Even in cold or dry weather, by
the time the air has reached the
back portion of the nose, it has
been warmed and humidified to the
appropriate levels.
Thirdly,
the nose houses the sensory
structures for the sense of smell.
Our
physicians have special interest and
training in the latest techniques
for helping patients with many nasal
problems.
