Skull Base
Surgery
The skull base
represents the bone that separates the
brain from the face, orbits, sinuses,
and ear. Tumors that occur in the
region of the skull base can be removed
by combining the talents of
neurosurgeons and otolaryngologists.
These tumors often present with many
different types of neurological problems
(e.g. hearing loss, dizziness,
hoarseness, vision loss, etc);
therefore, a team of healthcare
professionals is necessary to manage
these tumors successfully.
Tumors that occur
in the skull base include benign and
malignant tumors. These tumors can be
either a primary tumor or a metastasis
from a distant site. The breadth of
tumors that can occur are beyond the
scope of this web page. Instead, please
look at our pages for
acoustic neuroma
and
pituitary tumors,
to learn about some of the more common
skull base tumors.
